What you'll actually learn

Battle tested, honed through sport, with traditional roots

Jujutsu is the most complete martial art for self-defence and real life, because it doesn't stop when the fight changes shape. Standing, clinched or on the floor, you'll have an answer.

Self-defence that works

Real-world applications, restraints, personal protection and weapon defence — the same core taught to police and armed forces around the world.

Throws and takedowns

Jujutsu and Judo throws, trips and takedowns. How to put someone on the floor, and how to land safely when it's your turn.

Striking and ground

Effective, powerful striking, plus applied Jiu-Jitsu ground skills and modern submission grappling once you're ready for it.

When & where

Three sessions a week. Use your ten across any of them.

Tuesday

6.00–7.00pm

Beginners only

The beginners-only hour. Slower pace, small numbers, no sparring or rolling and the white belt syllabus taught from scratch — the best place to start.

Thursday

7.30–9.00pm

Mixed self-defence and sport Jujutsu. Beginners and advanced train together, each taught at their own level.

Sunday

5.00–6.30pm

Ladies Area 5.00–6.00pm

Mixed self-defence and sport Jujutsu, with a women-only area led by Sensei Gemma, 2nd Dan.

Wheatpieces Community Centre, Tewkesbury, GL20 7SP. Arrive ten minutes before your first class. Bring gym kit and a bottle of water — that's all you need until your Gi arrives.

Who teaches you

2nd Dan Black Belt

Sensei Mark — 2nd Dan

Started in 1999, returned to the art in 2014 under Rob Tiene, Lee Iannoccaro and Hanshi Ross. Level 3 first aid trained, level 2 fitness instructor, fully insured.

Hanshi Ross Iannoccaro — 8th Dan

Founded Taijutsu Kai in 1980 and still teaches. The first non-Japanese martial artist awarded the title Tasshi by Fumon Tanaka Soke. He'll be taking your grading.

I cannot recommend Mark and Jen enough as teachers. I have been training with them now for 5 months and they have provided me with so much support and insight in to my practice. You won't regret it if you give it a go. I promise!

Ellie Kim

Jen and Mark are both hugely talented jujutsu practitioners who live and breathe Japanese jujutsu. Their attention to the smallest details make them tremendously effective teachers.

Ian Connor

Jen and Mark are excellent instructors with incredible knowledge. Their knowledge and skills are amazing and I love learning from them.

The honest answers

I've never done a martial art in my life

That's who this is built for. Every new starter is taught separately from the rest of the class and works through the introductory programme at their own pace. Nobody is thrown in at the deep end, and you won't be sparring on night one.

Do I need a Gi to start?

No. Gym kit and a bottle of water will do. We measure you at class seven and hand your Gi over at class eight — it's included in the £99.

How long will the ten classes take?

Entirely up to you. Train once a week and you'll grade in about ten weeks; twice a week and it's nearer five. The milestones follow your attendance, not the calendar.

How long do I have to use the ten classes?

Six months from the day you buy. That's comfortable at once a week with room to spare for holidays, illness and the odd missed week.

Am I fit enough?

We have students who came to us for a completely new form of exercise and students who've trained for years. Beginners work within their own capabilities. You'll get fitter because you train — you don't need to get fit before you start.

What happens after the grading?

Carry on at £8 a class, or go to £50 a month for all three sessions — five hours of training a week. No contract and no joining fee, either way.

Can I try a class before I commit?

Yes, and we'd rather you did. Book a free trial, come down, see if you like us. The pathway will still be here afterwards.
