1980Association founded

Built for people with
other commitments.

You don't need to train every night to get good at this. You need the right material, taught in the right order, and a club that makes it easy to keep turning up.

We have jobs, children, exams, shifts, and a diary that changes week to week.

TJK Tewkesbury is a hobbyist club, and proudly so. Self-defence is our first priority and our foundation. We don't measure people purely by medals or tournament results. We also reward knowledge and consistency: the person who turns up twice a week for two years and really understands what they're doing.

That suits busy people perfectly. Nobody here is falling behind a competition squad or being judged against someone who trains every day. You progress through a graded syllabus at the pace your life allows, and every hour on the mat moves you forward.

Most of our members train once or twice a week. They're busy too, and in exactly the same position as you. That shapes the whole feel of the club: friendly, focused, and respectful of the fact that everyone's time is precious.

Why it works when
time is short.

Five reasons two or three hours a week goes further here.

01

Self-defence first

Everything we teach has a purpose. Releases from grabs and holds, strikes and blocks, throws and takedowns, ground defence and control. When your time is limited, it goes on skills that actually matter if you ever need them, not on scoring points under a rule set.

02

Huge depth, well rounded

Jujutsu covers stand-up, clinch and ground in one system. You won't need a second or third membership somewhere else to fill in the gaps, and the syllabus is deep enough to keep you learning for years.

03

Train more, or less, as life allows

Busy season at work? New baby? Exams? Drop to one session a week and keep your hand in. Things quieten down? Step it back up. Your training bends around your life rather than breaking the moment life gets in the way.

04

Miss a class? Catch another

Train at any of our three class nights in Tewkesbury, or at any other TJK club across Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. If work runs late on a Tuesday, you can still get your session in somewhere else that week.

05

A much bigger dojo

Joining Tewkesbury gives you access to the whole Taijutsu Kai association: seminars, gradings and events with senior senseis who bring decades of experience and knowledge. You get far more than one instructor's view of the art.

Flexible training

Missed Tuesday?
Train Thursday.

Real life doesn't follow a timetable, so your training doesn't have to either. One syllabus across the whole association means the material you learn in Tewkesbury is the same material taught at every other TJK club.

  • Three class nights a week in Tewkesbury: Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday
  • Drop in at any other TJK club when you need to catch up
  • Seminars, gradings and events across the association
  • Step your training up or down whenever you need to
A word from Sensei Mark

I'm in the
same shoes
as you.

I run my own full-time digital marketing business, and I'm a dad. I know exactly what it's like to have a hundred other commitments and still want to train, make real progress and learn new skills in the little free time you have.

That's how I've built the club. Classes are structured so every session counts, the syllabus is taught in a sensible order, and nobody is made to feel behind because they could only make it once this week.

I don't run TJK Tewkesbury for money, and I don't run it for credit. I run it out of passion for the art, to give something back, and as the next step in my own martial arts development. If you've got two or three hours a week and you'd like to spend them learning something genuinely useful, I'd love to see you on the mat.

Who trains
with us.

People in every kind of busy. Here's how the club fits around each of them.

Busy professionals

An evening on the mat is a complete switch-off from the screen and the inbox. You leave having learned something, worked hard and thought about nothing else for an hour. Long day at the office? Pick the class that fits, or catch one at another club.

Mums and dads

Family comes first, and we get that. Train when the childcare works and ease off when it doesn't. You'll be learning to look after yourself, staying fit, and setting a pretty good example at the same time.

Students

Coursework, exams and part-time jobs don't leave a lot of spare hours. Jujutsu gives you a skill for life, confidence, and a break from the books, and it's easy to scale back around deadlines and pick up again afterwards.

How we train

Safe, respectful
and rooted in
tradition.

Your time is precious, and so is your body. You have work in the morning and people relying on you, so the last thing you need is an injury from a class that got out of hand.

Training at TJK is controlled, supervised and matched to your level. Beginners start with how to fall safely, resistance is introduced gradually, and everyone looks after their training partner. Alongside the practical self-defence, we keep the Japanese traditions that give Jujutsu its character: etiquette, respect for your partners and instructors, and the discipline that comes with them.

  • Fully insured, with first aid trained senseis
  • Safe, controlled training matched to your level
  • A respectful club with no egos
  • Japanese traditions, etiquette and terminology
  • Part of Taijutsu Kai, founded in 1980, with one syllabus across ten clubs
  • Graded progression from white belt to black belt
What is Jujutsu?

I wish I had taken this up sooner! Have been at the club since the start of this year. Really professionally run, making sure you go through the basics before you start taking on anything more. Lessons are well structured and informative. Everyone at the club is really welcoming and friendly, there are no egos and they all just want to help you improve. I managed to train twice a week but wish I could train more. Would highly recommend.

I train with TJK Tewkesbury whenever I can on top of my usual main class (TJK Chosen Hill). It's a great addition as the style of training is slightly different. It allows me to push myself and really test the skills under a little extra pressure with friendly grappling and sparring sessions. Everyone there shows huge respect for each other and help each other out whenever possible, no matter what level they might be.

Very high quality instruction.
Welcoming, safe environment for beginners.
Good, engaging mix of self defence and sport.
Great physical conditioning, but with a focus on technique over strength.

Common
questions.

The things busy people usually ask before their first class.

Is once or twice a week really enough to make progress?

Yes. It's how most of our members train. The syllabus is graded and taught in a deliberate order, so each session builds on the last. Consistency over months and years matters far more than cramming in extra hours for a few weeks and then burning out.

What happens if I miss a few weeks?

Nothing, other than a warm welcome back. Work trips, holidays, poorly children and exam season happen to everyone here. You pick up where you left off, and your instructor will help you get back up to speed.

Can I train at other TJK clubs?

Yes. You can train at any of our three class nights in Tewkesbury, or visit other TJK clubs across Worcestershire and Gloucestershire if you've missed a session and want to catch up. Every club teaches the same syllabus.

Do I have to compete?

No. We're a hobbyist club with self-defence at the core. Sparring is encouraged because it tests what you've learned, but it's always optional, and you never need to compete to grade.

I'm not very fit. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Beginners work at their own pace, and Jujutsu is technical before it is physical. The fitness comes from the training, not before it.

How do I get started?

Book your free first class. There's no contract and no pressure. Come along, see how the club works, and decide afterwards whether it fits your week.
