What is Jujutsu?

We teach an advanced syllabus of Japanese Jujutsu (Ju Jitsu / Jiu Jitsu) with a combination of sport Jujutsu / mixed martial arts (MMA) and practical self-defence.

Because nearly all grappling arts derive from Japan, and specifically Jujutsu, including Judo, Sambo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Our training is a mix of all these combined. Rather than taking one area such as throws (Judo) or ground (BJJ), at TJK we train a combination of all these skills to have a complete art, for effective and practical self-defence skills, reinforced and honed by progressive sports training, focussing on techniques proven to work under pressure.

The TJK syllabus has been developed over 45 years by Sensei Ross Iannoccaro, 8th Dan Jujutsu, 2nd Dan Judo and 1st Dan Karate. Safety, Respect and Loyalty are woven throughout the TJK association and are key components of our club values at TJK Tewkesbury.

What to bring?

To begin, we advise you wear comfortable gym gear such as shorts / leggings and t-shirt. After your first month of training, we will advise you to purchase one of our training uniforms (Gi). Bringing a bottle of water is also recommended. If you have any health concerns, please inform the class sensei on arrival and bring any medication such as an inhaler if it may be needed. Please bring emergency contact info with you. You are welcome to bring a friend too, and this is often recommended but not required.

Never trained before?

That’s OK! All new students are taught separately from the rest of the class and will be taught practical basic skills. Beginners are encouraged to work within their own capabilities and at their own pace in an encouraging and friendly environment. All new beginners are placed on the introductory program.

We often have students join as a fun and engaging form of exercise. We welcome both women and men aged 16+ and all abilities. With our new classes in Tewkesbury, there is no better time to start than today!
